I do remember when pregnant women did not go out in public and we didn't say a woman was pregnant we said "she was in the family way"

I don't ever remember pregnant women not being out in the public, so it had to be before my time. I do remember the maternity clothes back then, though. It seemed like the maternity tops were almost a mini dress by themselves.Women covered up their bellies alot more than they do now.

In my grandmother's day, pregnant women stayed home out of public view during a time they called their "confinement". When my mother was "expecting" (you'd think they'd have been pretty SURE about it?!!!), I was not allowed to tell anyone, so as a first grader I drew pictures of my mother in her huge, blousey, hideous maternity dresses. I never heard the word "pregnant" til I was a teenager, and even then, it was considered "dirty"!!! Can you imagine?! But a lot of the modesty from those days was good, and important, and I wish we had it back.

I sure do and it was also never discussed in polite conversation. I also remember that the movie, Gone With the Wind, was almost banned because Clark Gable said the word 'damn'. Now look at what we must hear when we go to the movies or watch TV.

I though that was back in the 1400's!

I have a picture of my mom in 1950, at a group picnic out at the lake, WAY pregnant with my older brother. She gave birth the next day. It must have been before that.

Well, I'm 24, so in the case of Hollywood women, I remember (vaguely) when they used to hide a pregnant actress behind tables, and chairs on set instead of writing it into a show's story. I vaguely remember when actresses didn't talk about their pregnancy as much or shown off their bellies as much. As for regular women, no, in my time period, women don't hide when pregnant.

Small town livin tweren't so, but by same due respects, a pregnant woman was considerably more demure than the ladies of today. (unmarried PG chicks hid in the woodwork for the duration -- that WAS shameful).

No I do not remember that.May be I am not that old and I never been told by granie. When I lived in Greece it was very unusual to see ''special abilities '' people/kids out on public.that was sad as they somehow had some ''shame'' attached to them by society.I hope they have improved now.

No, but I remember when women used to keep the big belly covered. I wish they still would.
