What's the difference between an American minute and a normal minute?

I've heard this phrase used a lot by Americans... how many seconds is in the American minute? Is it longer or shorter than our minutes?

Its a figure of speech that probably originates back to the original "Minute Men" militia that could (theoretically) be ready to do battle in one minute. The expression probably means "right now", or in a period of time much shorter than an actual minute. I have never heard this expression used, but I have heard "New York minute" used many times, and it means about the same thing - "right now".

An American minute last exaclty the same time as ours, although they may need to stop for a burger half way through!

Actually, the expression is "a New York minute" - as in "I'd accept your million-dollar offer in a New York minute."

"In a New York minute" means "immediately, without delay."

It's a reference to big-city folks moving faster than country people, and New Yorkers talking, thinking, acting faster even than most other city folks.
