that you can't get them out of your head...even if you know you can't have them because they are taken? Do we not have control of our thoughts? I can be in the middle of working out, at work or about to fall asleep and she can just invade my mind! What's up with that?

I don't understand what Pip means by 'battle between instinct and culture..' on this topic.

Mad luv, no I haven't acted on it and I won't either. I am very well self-disciplined but it is so hard for me to not think of this girl...it must be harder since I am getting older or something...or maybe I just really like her. I don't know.

Because it's like being drunk.
You can't get sober until it's out of your system. Sometimes it just takes time, sometimes it takes sleeping it off and sometimes, it takes the more unpleasant of the 3 big options and that's getting it out of your system by force...

We have some measure of control over our thoughts but, usually, it's as much as we consciously allow.
The mind works more frequently on patterns. You get your mind into a rut, more often than not. The patterns you normally use set up neural networks that make it easier to think that same way, and less time to get there the next time you do. To change your way of thinking, you have to literally break the pattern of thought that came before and condition yourself to a new line of thought.
The more you attempt to control your thoughts, the better your chances of doing it. Not that you'll be able to every time, mind you, but you may not have as much difficulty.

It's like when you set up a computer to use a certain hard-drive. It uses that until you change where the wires lead.

Maybe it's a bad example but I hope it helps. And that you find a solution to your girl problem. Good luck.

(And besides, love is one of the most confusing emotions and connections we could possibly have! Just take a look at Van Gogh! Or, even more unnerving, Oedipus Rex...although that last one is probably even worse an example.)

I feel ya on that. I have a girlfriend and this girl that I know wants to kiss me has a boyfriend too, and she knows I want to kiss her and she just will not get out of my mind. I guess it is because we (humans) want what we can not have. I mean I could have her, and you could have that girl, it is just that when they or you are dating someone it makes it harder to get that person.

ahh, the battle between instinct and culture.

Instinct: spread your seed as far as you can to as many people as you can.. you haven't fulfilled your instinct with this person so they are stuck in your head for now.

why haven't you fulfilled your instinct?

Culture: you haven't fulfilled your instinct because our culture has helped us to, at least on some level, rise above such things.
