Print Screen button allows you to take picture of what is on your screen. when you press the Print Screen button the image of the screen is automatically copied to clipboard which can be pasted into a word document or a paint bmp image file etc.

Here is how to use it:

To copy the window or screen contents
To make a copy of the active window, press ALT+PRINT SCREEN.
To copy the entire screen as it appears on your monitor, press PRINT SCREEN.

To paste the image into a document, click the Edit menu in the document window, and then click Paste.

well, the button is placed in the top row just to the right of F12 button in a standard keyboard.....'Print Screen' is printed on the button itself.

In windows:

When you press Control + Print Screen, you get a screen capture of the entire display.

When you press Alt+ Print Screen, you get a screen capture of the active application - good for putting together training manuals, etc. and you only want to show the small pop-up.

In DOS (yes, DOS)...
Print Screen was used to send whatever was on the display to your printer.

:-)

Its a function of windows thats saves a picture of the display into the clipboard, which you can then copy and paste into paint or another image editor.
