I'm thinking about leasing a BMW 335xi sometime in the next year and was wondering how well the BMW models handle in the snow. I drive a rear-wheel drive car now, which is horrible in inclimate weather, and I'm looking for an all-wheel drive car that will give me better control in snow and rain.

What are your thoughts/comments about your experiences with BMW's?

It is all about the tires. If you have snow tires on, BMW's are great, especially with traction control. You pretty much have to be brain dead to not be able to get around or into trouble. Even with all wheel drive, it still comes down to tires. You can launch faster in AWD, but braking and turning are exactly the same either way.

Reality is... that in snowy conditions you need either an All Wheel Drive or Front wheel drive.
Rear wheel drive all on it's own ain't going to cut it.
Best example I ever saw was the notion of a "Dog sled" that was driven by the Dogs pushing the sled from the rear, haha. doesn't make sense right?

I used to drive my 323ci (E46) in NH all year.

With snow tires, the DSC is good enough to keep the car drivable. Only times when I had some problems was climbing steep unplowed slopes... where I had to turn off DSC to get the wheels to spin a little.

I don't see you'll have any problems with the xi. But please don't overlook installing snow tires.

Well, like everybody else said, it has to be common sense(or not) that it's mostly about the tires. If there snow tires then the performance would be great, I'm not sure about other tires since well, I don't live in snow, so there's that.

I know my older BMW is terrible on icy roads, I think BMW overall is a heavy car which is good, get some wider tires
