Yankee Stadium is an icon for New Yorkers and New York City. There have been several hall of famers who were known not only for their baseball ability, but had celebrity status and contributed tremendously to society. Thousands of kids also looked up to players who played at the Stadium including the greatest, Babe Ruth. The stadium is known as "The House that Ruth Built." 26 World Champion teams have come out of that stadium and have been the players have been role models since they stepped onto the field. Good luck on your report and I hope this helps!

In addition to what Aaron said, how about if I ask you why is Fenway so important to Boston or Wrigley so important to Chicago? These stadiums represent not only the great game of baseball to the fans in those cities, but the storied past of the game as well.
They are historical landmarks. The city wraps its arms around this place and I can guarantee you that the very last game that is played in "The House That Ruth Built" will not see a dry eye in the crowd.
Check out the links I have listed below. Maybe this will help answer your question.

I'm a Red Sox fan, but even I made the trip to NY last year to go to a game at Yankee Stadium before it is torn down. Yankee Stadium is to "baseball fans" what Mecca is to Islam.

It isn't.
That's why they are tearing it down. Plus all the Guido's have ruined the place.
