There are some people I call "Marathon People". They always have to push the limits, to the point of putting their own lives in jeopardy. Look at Evel Kneivel, who just died, and Steve Fossett, likewise. I think they say, "Life is short, so make every moment count." Others will say, "Life is short; don't risk making it shorter!" It must be an addictive adrenalin rush that pushes some people into more and more risk-taking. You wonder if they realize that someone will eventually say about them, "He died doing what he loved best."

If you never take a risk, what happens if a perfect opportunity passes you by?
You feel regret for the rest of your life.
Some people do it because they're compelled to and feel uneasy in staying where they're at.
Some people can't stand where they are (for whatever reason) and so take the first opportunity to change it.
Some are raised in extremely strict settings and so, the moment they're able, they do every single thing that they weren't allowed to do before. Unfortunately, these are the people who most often pay for being rash with an even more unpleasant situation to come of it.
I do it (occasionally) for excitement and just a little bit of 'new' flavor. When things seem too dull and the days run together.
Or when I know that opportunity might pass me by. I *usually* only try to do something like that when I'm sure about the outcome. Doesn't always work out how I need it to but, then, sometimes it works out like I needed it but didn't realize what's best or want it to be that way.
Of course, if you go through life doing all the safe things, I don't consider that being alive; it's just existing to me.
Sorry if I'm being too vague but I think you get the picture.

For various reasons - but the reasons are not subject to our judgement - it is an individual's wish to take risks or not, and the magnitude of the risk
1. To some, it is a personality thing (typically type A, but not restricted to that) - some people get pleasure in getting their adrenaline rushing
2. To others who believe that 'greater risk => greater gain', so they go in for big risks
3. For some it may be a way of proving to themselves or others that they are worth more than others think they are. It is just way for them to boost their self-esteem.
4. Some do it out of absolute necessity to reach a certain goal.
Again, I m not the right person to say whether the reasons are right or wrong, but I m just stating here why people can and may take risks.
Good luck with your research !

People take such big risk because they realize that life is short, and they do not want to go through life never having felt a sense of applishment or just going through life being a nobody.

That's exactly why they take big risks...because life is so short. It is always better to try and fail than to never try at all. Some of the biggest rewards can come from taking the biggest risks.
