I understand Your viewpoint Smiley and Your correct in some ways.
The 80's wasn't nearly the decade for music the 70's was.
But You gotta admit it was better than what's come since
And it's hard for Me not to love the 80's
It was the best times of My life

Here's some of my favorite albums/songs:
First Album - Neighbor, Neighbor
Tejas - Ten Dollar Man
Rio Grande Mud - Just Got Paid
Deguello - Manic Mechanic
Fandango - Heard It on the X
Tres Hombres - Waitin' for the Bus
I never cared for anything they did after Deguello (1979), nor did many people my age I suppose. That was more for the MTV crowd and the young bingo Moms of the time.
I think many younger people in the 80's had their first exposure to ZZ Top via songs and videos like 'Legs', 'Gimme All Your Lovin' etc, which in my opinion has to be the most bland/uninteresting period for the band. I hated the 80's, as that decade killed many other great 70's bands with it's sell out attitude and cheap suits, ie; J Geils Band, Rainbow, Bad Company, and Genesis, to name a few. Of course the bands themselves should also be held accountable to some degree for their lameness during that decade. I guess when you're going head to head with Duran Duran and Aldo Nova, some sacrifices had to be made!
Darth - I really don't see much difference between the 80's and the present as far as quality is concerned. If I had to chose, I'd say that many of the underground bands of today do more for me (which isn't very much by the way) than anything that ever came out during the 80's.
So whether someone thinks I'm only correct with certain aspects of my summation is irrelevant to my stubborn way of thinking...Haa haa!

All real good. Not gonna take anything away from any of them. That said, I enjoy ZZ Top the most. Great solid fun biker rock. Always a great concert, and a good excuse to break out the tequila! Plus, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill may be the most criminally underrated rhythm section in Rock. Seriously, on the radio, TV and even to a degree their albums, it doesn't stand out enough, but live, those dudes are rock solid. Last time I saw them, they had Kenny Wayne Shepherd opening for them, and he was backed up by Double Trouble..... now THAT was a heck of a Rock n Roll show. Woulda been better with Stevie Ray, but one can't have everything. What can I say? besides...... "I ain't askin' for much. I said, Lord, take me downtown, I'm just lookin' for some tush." BQ- ZZ Top - "Got Me Under Pressure" it mighta been after their serious biker days but was the song that got me into themas a kid. Stevie Ray - "Little Wing" Buddy - "Peggy Sue" Janis - "Move Over" though lately.. I might prefer a newer band form Austin Texas.. the Sword. Not as legendary, but soooo darn good!

My introduction to ZZ Top came through MTV in the early 80s. All the songs were.... repetitive.
Later, I realized that they had a great old back catalog of blues-rock; but aside from the hits, I've never taken the time or effort to dig into their stuff. I've got a hits comp that covers their career, and that's about the extent of my ZZ Top listening experience. I can say that from what I know, my favorite song is "Tush". You can't find a better example of perfect bar room rockin' blues.

I'm a southern boy so you know I love ZZ Top. Saw them in Denver back in 1982 on their El Loco Tour. Best 3 man band around.
I been listening to Fandango in the truck to and from work. Mexican Blackbird
and Blue Jean Blues along with Tush and their BackDoor Medley .
I think they also do the best covers of Elvis Viva Las Vegas too. And who can forget Tube Snake Boogie and Pearl Necklace .....Beer Drinkers/Hell Raisers and La Grange. Classics..........

I love when the radio plays "Waitin' for the Bus" followed by "Jesus Just Left Chicago". A straight ahead Texas Blues Driven Rock Band.
"Easin' down the highway in a new Cadillac,
I had a fine fox in front, I had three more in the back."

I love a lot of ZZ Top... I think my favorite album from them is 'Deguello' because it is really good from beginning to end... "Hi Fi Mama", "Manic Mechanic" and "She Loves My Automobile"... but they have great tunes througout their career... I think an overlooked gem is "TV Dinners" from 'Eliminator'... "I like the Enchiladas and the Teriyaki too, I even like the chicken if the sauce is not too blue."
