x = number of 50 p coins
y = number of 10 p coins

x + y = 440

With two variables, a second formula is needed.

60 pounds = 6000 p

50x + 10y = 6000

y = 440 - x

50x + 10(440 - x) = 6000
50x + 4400 - 10x = 6000
40x = 1600
x = 40

Assuming 100 p to the pound
(it was 240 last time I was in England :)

Let L = the number of 50-pence pieces
Let X = the number of 10-pence pieces

X + L = 440
X ( 10 ) + L ( 50 ) = 6000

Use the first equation to isolate X

X = 440 - L

Then substitute into the second and solve for V

( 440 - L ) ( 10 ) + L ( 50 ) = 6000

4400 - 10 L + 50 L = 6000

40 L = 1600

L = 40

So there are 40 50-pence coins and 400 10-pence coins.

Check:

40 + 440 = 440 coins

40 * 50 + 400 * 10 = 2000 + 4000 = 6000 pence = 60 pounds.
