I'm remembering some jobs I had a long time ago as a ticketseller at an old, one-screen movie theatre & at an amusement park. Also, a lot of people at reception desks or information desks look like they have nothing to do much of the time. (I'm not as lazy as I sound; I'm looking for a way to pay the bills while maximizing the time I can spend working on my novel.)

Night time security guard is one of the best positions for this. You have to make the rounds so you get up and move. You can't sleep on the job so many employers prefer that you be a student (studying) or a writer. So long as you are sensible and do the required work and stay alert, they are mostly ok with it.

I wrote a novel in 58 days while working 12 hour shifts as a security guard at a coal mine. I spent 4 hours of each shift on patrol and got to write at least 6.

Fire fighter - but the also spend a lot of time working on keeping equipment clean and in shape. Night receptionist at hotel - daytime is probably fairly busy, but if they have someone on during midnight shift, might be pretty quiet. If they are sensible though they'd assign you other things to do while you're there. Actually, there are probably very few if any jobs left where you just sit and wait, and are paid mainly to be there and available. Most jobs like that would find other duties for you to do to fill in the time.

There are (suppposedly) government grants where they will pay your bills while you write your novel...there was a commercial on a while back about this big book of government grants you can send for and the information was in there...I don't see why you can't go to government websites and get that same information for free...

you need a free job, like mine, be a tour guide, you work when needed and you can always reject an offer if you need more time.
