I'm not asking how to get in a PC if you've forgotten your password, but I was just browsing through some old questions on Yahoo! Answers, and I noticed how many people have forgotten their password.
Something crossed my mind ... if you can so easily bypass the windows XP password, should you have forgotten it, then what on earth is the point in even having a password on a PC in the first place?
If you do forget your password and you can bypass it without super hacker skills, then surely it is not even 1% secure?
Someone can get straight in and view your files, documents etc. Or can they?
I don't want a lesson in how to because I never forget passwords, but I just wondered what the point is.
Maybe I am missing the point somewhere ... it's almost the same as locking your front door, but leaving the back door permanently unlocked.

MS never intended that the password system in XP would prevent you accessing your computer. It was designed simply to stop someone who had physical access to your PC / Laptop from making changes to your system (at admin level) ot your data (at user or admin level). When you read the answers posted on YA you quite often get entirely the wrong idea. In fact MS suggest that you make a bootable floppy right away and keep it safe so that you can rest the forgotten password (Use help and support on the start menu with the search term "password reset" to see how to do it). The fact that so many people ask the question shows the advice is not being taken on board. If you haven't got a floppy then you can download at least five free programs that will allow you to get into any XP machine. The one I use will normally take 60 seconds.

The point is that you still need physical access to the PC to crack the passwords.....sure there are people who can hack you remotely, but you are talking about a tiny percentage of the population who have that knowledge.

the best way is to put an administrator password on when in safe mode ....by pressing f8 on startup...after the bios screen goes...this will stop most people from being able to change the passwords or see the user accounts....nothing is 100% or you wouldnt be able to take your pcs for repair.......

There is no point really.. but it makes us feel better it's like a lock on your door, if someone wants to break in a lock just slows them down, it wont stop them... you shouldn't keep sensitive information on you computer..
