hey dont panic... memory is the easiest part to upgrade.. seriously i was able to do it when i was 12
Im presuming you are running on Microsoft xp ... most people will advise on having at least 512mb of ram ... however i would probably go for 1GB as this way you will be smoother opening files.
On the back of your laptop there will be an area of plastic that opens up... take it off.... you will either have 1 or 2 memory slots..
If you have 1 then you need to buy a 1GB memory stick
If you have 2 then you can either buy 1GB memory or two 512mb sticks
Unclip the 256 and put the new memory in.... it simply just snaps into place...
ill give you a site that will show you step by step... but you should have a problem
http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/install-laptop-memory.htm
Hope this helps
(advise from a 16 year old who is studying Computer Programming at College)
Good Luck =)
added info... check what type of memory you need...
the memory type will be something like SIMM or DIMM
here is a quick guide to telling you what you have
# SIMM – 30 pin – 3 inches in length
# SIMM – 72 pin – 4 inches in length
# DIMM – 168 pin – 5 inches in length
but that might confuse you... so if you take your memory to a shop they will be able to tell you when you buy it...

Yes, you can upgrade your memory. If you are a little unsure as what you to do, I would suggest that you take your machine to one of the local independent computer repair stores. Most will install memory for free or for a small fee if you purchase the memory from them.
Second, you may want to check the 'msconfig" utility to see just what is loading with windows. To do this, read the following.
To control what starts with Windows:
Click Start and then Run. (Vista – Start>All Programs>Accessories>Run). In the run box, type "msconfig" without the quotes and then hit "Enter". This will open the System Configuration Utility. Click the "Startup" tab. Now remove the check mark from any and all programs that you do not want to start or "boot" with Windows. Now click apply and then click OK.
You will need to restart your system. When the system starts you will see a box stating that you used the Config. utility, put a check in "Don't show this box at startup".
That should do it.
Do not remove any check marks from your security software. You want it to load with your operating system.

You can find any search engine (Google/Yahoo etc.etc.) what kind of memory goes inside your laptop, but beware to remove the battery from the laptop, cause putting the new memory inside could make short-circuit, but check on the site from gateway www.gateway.com how much ram you can put inside 2GB is much better, most of the time the memory is holding by a clip beside the memory (first remove the cover) the top is in the middle so one of the modules must turn over

It's not excessively difficult. The first think you've got to find out is what type of memory it needs and the second thing is how you get the damned case open.
I suggest you ask your technical bodkin friend to do it for you.

upgrading a memory is pretty easy if you know about computers. otherwise, its best left to the pros. the best you can do is take your laptop to where you wanna buy your ram, in a computer store, & make a deal with them that if you buy the ram from them, they'll install it for free. after all, for them, its as easy as 1,2,3.

You can upgrade your ram. Go to www.ebuyer.com or www.dabs.co.uk and take a look.
Youll need your specific type of ram through, so make sure you use a program like "Everest" to tell you what type you have.

Just search for RAM on internet for your computer, you might need model number. I don't think that is the problem though because even with 256 ram your computer will bootup.

You need to upgrade my friend.
If your laptop has 256K in it its highly unlikely that you will still be able to buy the memory for it as memory has changed a lot since then.
How long have you had this laptop for!

Yes you can. If your computer is under warranty they can sell you ram and instructions on how to install it. That would be the easiest way for you to do this,
