I am a tradesman, and the item you are considering seems like it would be superb for diy, it would probably be good enough for a lot of trades. Go for it!

The Stanley workbenches are very useful tools and I'd recommend one. Mine is very old and I use it all the time. However it does not take the place of a typical workbench such as these:

Get the Stanley and some 2x4's and he should be able to build his own according to his needs for a very low cost. Here is a free plan:

MDF out gases and you don't want to be hallucinating while you screw that special screw that's made for MDF otherwise known as particle board. 3/4 plywood seems expensive but if you have it, use it. I have simple 2x4's and cover them with a piece of outdoor carpet. I often push it aside and use the 2x4's. The gaps between the 2x4's are handy for somewhere for the drill bit to go w/o drilling into the top of my workbench.

If you want to start a woodworking project, you need all the necessary information, including schematics, blueprints, materials lists, dimensions etc. That is where Teds Woodworking comes in. The plans are clearly drawn and there're step-by-step explainations of how the plan should be done and put together. Go here https://tr.im/tPjir

There are several other sites whose collection of plans have the dimensions totally wrong without any indication of parts lists, material lists or the tools needed. If you're one of those people who have bought plans like this in the past, Teds Woodworking will change your perception.

i take it your talking about a portable workmate as opposed to a heavy duty work bench, if that's the case there really isn't much difference in terms of what they can do, some might be a little bigger and stronger but they all do pretty much the same thing, with some people its all down to the make, but personally i prefer functionality and price over make, the one in the link is pretty good but i would go for this one personally

not much difference in price, just looks a Little better
good luck

Depends on how much you want to spend but there is a nice range from £30 to £160 is at Toolstop - personally the Draper one at 30 quid is the one for me :
