Washington is still rebuilding their team. I'd say over the next few years, they will consistently get better, but as you stated, they need pitching. Once they start a good solid rotation, I think they have impact possibility, especially in a new stadium, but as for now, I'd say wait until 2010 or so before they become a threat to the Braves, Mets and Phillies

Just because you don't have any Nats players on your fantasy baseball team doesn't mean you shouldn't give them any respect. The Nats aren't the last place team in the NL east. The Marlins are. Remember that the Nats were the major factor in knocking out the Mets out over the last two weeks of 2007.
Nobody is talking Nats in the playoffs this year. They weren't in 2005 either. They pulled off some good trades midseason in 2006 while Zimmerman made a credible push for ROY just a year out of UVA. They were expected to lose 100 plus games last year and were ranked by many as the worst team in the majors. Their record shows otherwise. They continue to overachive and should suprise many next year.
They have a good platoon of Nick Johnson and Dmitri Young at first. Ronnie Belliard and Zimmerman should remain fixtures at second and third. When Guzman is healthy, he has done well for the Nats. Unfortunately, he has only been healthy for two months in three years (like Nick Johnson it seems).
The outfield of AK, Milledge and a platoon of Wily-Mo and Dukes should put up 100 HR's in a (Philadelphia style) Nationals Park.
Losing Schneider puts a huge hole at the plate. Flores' offense (if that's what you call it) does not make up for his horrible defense.
The biggest holes are at shortstop and catcher. The pitching is built around draft picks and young prospects. Clippard and Dettwyler may be household names in two years. Livan is still a free agent possibility. Everyone still loves him here.
The bench will probably have Langehaans, A-F'n Boone, Lopez, Watson and Logan. They all could fill in well for any injuries. The Nats have always been able to do well pinch hitting. With some of the new guys, I would expect more stolen bases and extra base hits.
Hang in there Nats fans. We'll get our respect soon.

Not in 2008, if Milledge and Dukes can get their attitudes under control, if Clippard can pitch effectively, if Dmitri Young can put on an encore of this past season and if they can bring in a little more talent to fill the middle of the batting order. Too many if's

team overall performance in a sparkling park is frequently undesirable- there are oddities in each and every section that take some weeks to locate, study and adjust to... so i does no longer assume the Nats to come lower back out of the gate engaged on all cylinders. Playoffs - no - sorry. With the Mets, Phils and Braves all in that branch the Nats are going to ought to play previous unbelieveable baseball AND all 3 communities have all their wheels fall off. Will they sell extra tickets - i think of so. The draw of a sparkling park and a few new faces gets human beings in the seats. I only wish they provide their team a while to gel.

They might, but they're in a tough division. The Phillies and Mets are both well ahead of them and the Braves probably are as well. Even with a successful year, they may only finish 4th. They'll get it rolling eventually though.

You really can't win without pitching... They'd have to pick some people up on the trade wires... Unfortunately for the Nats... no one wants to trade with Leatherpants (Jim Bowden).

They may do better than last year, but without pitching, I don't see them contending for a play-off spot

No they still have a ways to go. The Mets, Phillies, and Braves are in their way. They might move ahead of the Marlins but that's about it.

i suppose, it would be nice if nick johnson played, even though dmitri young is a hitting machine.. id like to see them do ok. even as a yankee fan.
it would be nice if the bad attitudes of lastings and dukes were resolved too.
