Yeah, I hear ya. Especially the black ice, I went into a ditch one time cause of that stuff. And then when the snow covers the ice, isn't that just great, I almost hit a tree last weekend because of that. Yeah, me and ice and snow don't go together too great when it comes to driving. And we're supposed to get a big snow storm tomorrow... Sucks!

Rear-wheel and front wheel cars drive differently. Front wheel drive is easier, rear wheel drive tens to slide more and turn off-line. In either case you need to drive in the highest gear for the speed that is safe. So, if driving at 20, then keep in 2nd or 3rd - not 1st (precise details depends on your gear ratios, etc). Drive gently, gentle acceleration, make good use of engine braking. All of which means anticipating even more than usual, and keeping speed down. Don't keep an iron grip on the steering wheel. You need to be a bit relaxed, don't worry about minor deviations from your intended line.

4 wheel drive does help in the snow because there is at least some traction there. But you are right about the ice. It doesn't matter what the heck you drive, you are still going to slide.

Well. I drive a bigger Chevy Tahoe and i assure you that 4X4 offers more traction than 2WD twice as much as a matter of fact. It may boil down to operator ability. I work in a place that is only accessible by ice road Jan, Feb, Mar. and i live in the arctic so i know ice

It's got everything to do with driving technique and little to do with what bells & whistles your car/truck came with.
Of course there are still ice patches that nail the best of us.
My dad has nearly wrecked his Ford explorer in an ice storm, but I can keep my rear wheel drive Trans Am from slipping on an icy road no problem.

Snow, even a 4x4 cant go up against ice-I really hate the black Ice that Texas has. You have no traction on Ice, unless you have chains and even then its difficult

Ditto!
What I enjoy most about 4 wheel drive is seeing the ones who have it trying to get themselves out of the ditch they just landed in after sliding right off the road after speeding past me like I wasn't moving.

4 wheel drive doesn't mean 4 wheel stop...there are some 4x4 drivers around here who don't know that!

Yes, I learned that the hard way after purchasing a 4WD Jeep Wrangler. Also, using 4WD reduces your mileage.
