I hope not. What do you think most of our country would use for electricity and heat? That stuff already costs a fortune and its pretty much the cheapest option.

Currently about 50% of our energy comes from coal. Predictions are that we'll need significantly more electricity in the coming decades. The only plausable way to generate that is more coal burning plants.
There is no significant other source of energy. Perhaps nuclear could also be increased.
It would be a serious folly to stop any further coal plants.

no because coal plants have very little exhaust these days.. ..the technology has advanced enough that the more modern coal electric plants are very efficient in terms of pollution. They didn't used to be, which is why it has a bad connetation...but it's alot better now. Still more expensive than nuclear however.
