whats the difference between aluminum sulfate & potassium alum? I would be using it to tann a deer skin.?

originally i thought alum was alum ,i didnt know that they were different types

Potassium alum = KAl(SO4)2

Aluminum sulfate = Al2(SO4)3

The word alum has come to mean any sulfate double salt of a +1 metal with a +3 metal.
