Santa Claus (no "e") is from the Dutch name Sinterklaas, or St. Nicholas. He was a bishop in the 4th century who was famed for his generous gifts to the poor. When Christian missionaries went into Europe way back when, they found that the Europeans had various winter traditions about gift-giving. One was that the god Odin would have a hunting party, and if children left their shoes out with carrots and treats for Odin's horses, "Odin" would leave treats for them in return. As Christianity replaced the earlier religions, these kind of traditions remained and Father Christmas or St. Nicholas would leave treats for the children. The Santa Claus we are most familiar with is the fellow made popular in Clement Moore's famous poem "A Visit From St. NIcholas", or "Twas the Night Before Chistmas". He showed Santa Claus coming on a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer, coming down the chimney, and wearing the famous red suit.

Santa Claus was based on a real historic person, so in this sense, yes he was real. Saint Nicholas of Myra is the primary inspiration for the Christian figure of Santa Claus. He was a 4th century Christian bishop of Myra in Lycia, a province of the Byzantine Anatolia, now in Turkey. Nicholas was famous for his generous gifts to the poor, in particular presenting the three impoverished daughters of a pious Christian with dowries so that they would not have to become prostitutes. He was very religious from an early age and devoted his life entirely to Christianity.
Pre-modern representations of the gift-giver from church history and folklore merged with the British character Father Christmas to create the character known to Britons and Americans as Santa Claus. Father Christmas dates back at least as far as the 17th century in Britain, and pictures of him survive from that era, portraying him as a well-nourished bearded man dressed in a long, green, fur-lined robe. He typified the spirit of good cheer at Christmas, and was reflected in the "Ghost of Christmas Present" in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol.
