My brother in law has plenty of land in Jamaica. He's requesting some seed. I must mail everything to him in a barrel. I'm concerned about rose plants. Will they survive the trip to Jamaica?

If you mail them bare root and well wrapped in damp newspaper they should be alright for a few days, they won't have any chance of growing though, they need a cold spell in winter without leaves or they just give up flowering. I wouldn't bother. They're not suitable for a tropical climate

if they are rooted and the root end is in a plastic bag containing soil, they should survive the trip. I would water them just before they go into the barrel, wrap them in several layers of newspaper (to help keep them from being crushed) and then place all of that in a large plastic bag. place this n the barrel last and then surround them with even more newspaper to keep everything stable.

do not over-water or they stand a chance of fungus growing - just moist should be fine though.

hope this helps! :)

edited to add...no rose seed. sorry.

one other thing. he needs to make certain that it is ok to import seed and live plants. i live in belize, central america and it is illegal - unless you have agricultural permits!

Edited again to say that roses do not require cold weatehr to bloom. They do beautifully in my garden and the temps never fall below 60 degrees.

It is possible, but most countries have rules and regulations regarding the import or export of plants, fruits, and animals from other countries. You should probably check and make sure it is legal before you send anything like that to Jamaica.
