The fireplace vent was not all the way open, so smoke from a starter log filled the house last night. We are having guests from out of town tonight!!!

Bake a pie and some sugar cookies. If the smell doesn't go away, at least you'll have pie and cookies.

well since in a time crunch try opening the windows a bit to air out and wash what you can and febreeze stuff. in my old apt the bricks in our fireplace weren't laid right so the neighbor upstairs lit fires that came into ours and smoked us out. there is an oxygen machine that will suck all the oxygen out and leave no smell at all but of course you can not be in the house during the time due due no oxygen and i don't know how much it costs but the apt did ours and i was happy with it.

Did the owner paint the ceilings? If no longer wash them with a cleansing soap and water answer. Very seldom even as repainting leases do the ceilings get finished and because that smoke rises the ceiling receives the brunt of the scent. you also may attempt burning scented candles and having the HVAC ducts steam wiped clean.

Put several shallow bowls of white or cider vinegar around the house and it will remove the smoke odor. To hurry the process put vinegar on a rag and wave it around. I used to have a bowl in the room where relatives would smoke and there would be no smell the next day!

You need to air the house thoroughly and soft furnishings such as rugs and drapes will need to be cleaned. You will also need to explain to your guest when they arrive in case of lingering odours. I am sure they will be ok with it once you tell them what happened.

Good luck. I also would recommend you check your ventilation before any more ventures into fireplace use.

Cheers

open all the windows and let it air out for at least 3hrs and then get some water in pails or big pots and sit them in the middle of all your rooms that smell like smoke. the water takes in the smell and your house is back to normal.

Try a frebreeze type product but look for anything with citris , it helps neutralize the smell. It may not get rid of it completely but will most certainly help better than just regular air fresheners.

Just open some windows for a while, it'll go away. I have an ionic air cleaner that works incredibly well, have you ever considered that? It works for cigarette smoke and a variety of indoor pollutants.

Febreeze is a miracle product!! I smoked for years, and when I quit I was able to spray my house with it, and the smell vanished! It's amazing!

first open your windows if you can, even if its just for a few minutes. then buy one of those air filters that use charcoal. i have one that plugs into my outlet and has a nightlight. absolutely gets rid of all odors in a short amount of time. i think the brand i have is true air.
