Can't be pick pocketed that way. Wallets are easy to pick. Experts suggest fanny packs worn so the pack is in the front of your body but that protects from pick pockets not snatch, grab and run robbers who will grab the buckle on the back, open it and pull the belt off of you and run. You think you would be able to stop it but it happens so fast that your reaction time is too slow for their speed and agility.

The seasoned traveler will get a belt that you wear under your clothes that has a compartment to put your money in. It is under your shirt or blouse and is the safest way.

Partly because that much cash would attract attention and questions from airport security. It's not illegal and they could not be prevented from flying based on carrying cash but it would be a hassle.

Mostly though, just because they were college kids who thought they were James Bond and wanted to feel like it.

I suppose they didn't want to have their carry on pilfered while they were snoozing or in the head-it happens! As to why they didn't wire the money, maybe they didn't want to let Uncle Sam in on the deal?
