Try to get a cop to write you a will or read a real estate contract for you.

The number of lawyers vs cops has nothing to do with each other. Even if everyone behaved and we didn't need cops we would still likely have a use for lawyers. Not that I am fond of lawyers.

People like money.

Consistently throughout history, two of the lowest paid jobs have been soldier and police officer.

Lawyers make a good deal of money in our system. While some of them can charge more because of their skill, some do just because they can. Since lawyers make more money, more people want to be them.

Also, people love to get money for things that aren't really worth it. Its a booming trend to sue people for insane amounts of money. Seeing that they can get themselves fame and fortune by being the ones that win those cases, more people are attracted to being lawyers.

The courts and lawyers are used for people who have disagreements---and there are many.----

In many towns---even those without any cops---an old saying prevails---"this town is not big enough for a lawyer but 2 can make a hellava living"

Because you can make more money as a lawyer than as a cop.

In the US, we like money.

where do you get your numbers?

1.5 M lawyers seems about right out of 300M population - that is .5%.

But depending on how you define "law enforcement", 700K seems low to me.

Please respond with citations to you claims.

Most people have this prospective, why risk your life making almost nothing, when you can be perfectly safe making the big bucks, cops are under paid in most places, in my opinion.
