I think I'm right but I'm not sure...i think your have to have 2 equations. The first one is 90= x + y because the two number equal 90. The second equation is 90= 4x + 10 because the two number still equal 90 but now the second number is 10 more than 4 times the first number.
The second part is solving for a variable in the scond equation because all you have to solve for is x. so in this case x=20. Then you subsitute x in the first equation to look like this 90=20 + y. then you solve for y and y=70.
Hope this helps and i hope i was right because that would be awsome

let me try.
the sum of two numbers is 90.
-this means we are going to use addition because of the word 'sum.'
let a(as the 1st no.) and b(as the 2nd no.) be the two nos.
a+b=90
the second is 10 more than 4 times the first.
-this means
b is more than 10 , than 4x a,or b=4a+10
first we must solve for a.
the formula is a+b=90
a+(4a+10)=90
b has been substituted by the formula formulated above.
a+4a+10=90
now combine similar variables.
a+4a=90-10
5a=80
then divide both sides to find the answer.
5a/5=80/5
a=16
then we can solve for b.
the formula is still a+b=90, but to get b substitute a for the value we solved earlier.
16+b=90
combine again the common variables
b=90-16
b=74
then there it is..hope i helped mail me if its confusing i can help, i hope..heheheh

X+ (4x+10)= 90
. -10 -10
X+4X=80
5X=80
5X/5= 80/5
X=16
16+ (4X16+10)=90
16+ (64+10)=90
16+74= 90
The numbers are 16 and 74.

Explanation:A+B=90
B=Ax4+10
90-10=80
80 divide by 4=20(The smaller number)
90-20=70(The bigger number)
They are 20 and 70.
