Be careful - even though barbs will likely leave them be, their constant activity and tendancy to roam all over the whole tank can stress out the cichlids. Try it if you want and it might work, but I personally would not do it, and have found that mild cichlids do much better with calmer fish as tankmates.

I also think it's a little unfortunate that you get definite answers desite the lack of information on the size of the tank.

Yes,a lot will depend on the number of T. Barbs,the more the better. They will spend more time picking on each other and leave the less challenging fish alone. Ten or so would be a good starting point.
