Nobody complains because it wasn't the Yankees who paid him. You don't hear much about the Royals paying a scrub pitcher $40 million like they did last year either.

The Royals have to overpay to get players they want. They need a right hand hitting outfielder that has some pop in his bat. It's been 3 seasons since KC hasn't had a 20 homerun 100 RBI player, which is something Guillen can fix. They also are a team full of young players that need a veteran presence in the clubhouse. Really good players aren't going to come to KC until they start winning again, so they've got to start somewhere. The other poster mentioned Andruw Jones - assuming the Royals could even afford him, do you really think a player like that is going to come play for the Royals? No, he'll take less money and play for a team that gives him a better chance at winning immediately. Other people are mentioning that KC overpayed for Meche also. If Guillen has as good a year as Meche did (he pitched much better than his record indicated - he lost 9 games where he went at least 6 innings and gave up 3 runs or less) I'll be a happy Royals fan.

Is that a lot of money? Yes. And the Royals shouldn't be pumping that kind of money into a player like Jose Guillen. They could have made that offer (plus way more) to Andruw Jones per se. But, this is the same Royals team that paid Gil Meche $55million dollars over four years last years off season. And of course, there was the incredibly overpaid offer made to J.D. Drew in the 2006 off season of 5years/$70million by the Red Sox. Bottom line is that the market generates the demand and increases the prices. But, with a free agent market like this years, I have no idea what the Royals are thinking. Perhaps that's why they finish dead last every year in the AL Central.

Who else was knocking on this guys door for KC to shovel that kind of cash his way? NOBODY!!! This type of signing will drive player prices up in the next couple of years. A-Rod should now be able to weasel an additional $36 million from the Yankees because of this. Thank you KC.

Kansas City is the best minor league team in baseball. Hence they are the worst major league team. They have to overpay their players because most players do not want to play for a losing team that doesn't have any signs of winning.
