I recently got a free Dell laptop. I want to upgrade the processor and the RAM on it, but I can't seem to find the socket type on the processor. The processor it uses now is a 1-GHz/733-MHz Pentium III-M. Anyone know what socket type this is?

Wow! 2 different answers, now I don't know which one it is. It is a Dell Ispiron 8100, if that helps. Also any suggestions on a CPU that fits it and will work is great.

Pentium III-M is SLOT A or socket 370. It uses SO-DIMM RAM PC-133.
I think the largest Pentium III-M processor made was 1.2ghz and that's not much of an uograde from the 1ghz733mhz chip.
It is 1ghz with PC133 ram and 733mhz with PC100 ram.
Most came with 256mb PC133 ram.
If you have two slots for the ram you can add another 256 or 512 stick. the 256 is around $35.00 and the 512 is around $65.00
It's going to be costly for the upgrade and after you still won't have much by today's standards.
The "M" means mobile which is for laptops.
The largest P3-M socket 370 is 1.2ghz.

not sure abt laptop, but desktop Pentium-III has got two types, Slot A and Socket 370...
a Slot A Pentium-III looks like a brick and it juz slot into the mobo, like the rams
Socket 370 are like the ones that we see now, a small squarish cpu with pins on one side
Socket A is AMD's... for Athlon XP and Duron...
