It was a completely different dynamic before free agency. EVERYONE relied on home-grown talent and good trades. So using players that came into the game before the 70's as examples of the Yankees brilliance is not really relevant to your point. It was a different time.

There is no doubt the Yankees of the modern era have developed some fine players. So have the Seattle Mariners. The difference between the Yankees and everyone else is their ability to pay huge salaries (which has nothing to do with baseball smarts). Therefore, they can retain their young talent when free agency rolls around. As great as he can be, would anyone else have paid Derek Jeter $20 million a year on a long-term contract? No. Would anyone else overpay a 36 year old catcher with a big 4 year contract? No. Would Andy Pettitte and his fragile arm make $16 million a year outside of New York? No.

Look back at the talent the old Montreal Expos had in the 80's and 90's. Randy Johnson, Vlad Guerrero and Pedro Martinez are just three examples. They eventually lost all their young talent either directly through free agency or traded the player just prior to free agency since they knew they couldn't resign him at the what would be the going rate. (A rate, I might add, escalated over the years because the Yankees set outrageous salary benchmarks which, in turn, were used by other players as a bargaining chip.) The Yankees don't worry about losing a young guy they like because, gosh darn it, they can afford to pay whatever they want to keep him in place.

It's assumed the Yankees they've got a rediculous payroll. Heck, A-Rod has a bigger salary alone then the entire Marlin franchise. If they get Santana and give him the money that's been thrown out there, then the Yanks will be spending more money on the two players than about 5 teams can ever afford to spend on their entire roster. Heck, I heard that Melky might get thrown in on the Santana deal, and if he is, I'm saying right now that the Yankees sign Andruw Jones to replace him.

The Yankees are like a kid with money in a candy store, they see something they want and they get it. The spend money frivalously. 30 million to A-rod, 15 to Rivera....it's all rediculous. In all seriousness though, when was the last time you've looked at the Yankees and been able to say that the best player on the team was a product of the Yankees farm system?

I agree that in the past they did develop alot of their talent. Bernie Williams was one of my favorites after getting to see him play Class A ball and then watch him get to the majors. Now it seems that they are more willing to send away those prospects and pay tons of money elsewhere. Hughes was supposed to be an untouchable until they wanted Santana and then they were going to package him with Melky and 2 other prospects for Santana and then go out and get Rowand to play Center. When you supposedly have the best minor league system, why trade those guys before you give them a chance?
And the Red Sox are doing the same thing. The only reason their payroll isn't quite as high is because they don't have AROD's ridiculous contract. I'm sorry but that kind of money to play baseball is a joke and a slap in the face of every fan that buys a ticket.

They spend their money well but they do buy more than they develop. Damon, Abreu, Clemens, A-Rod, Giambi, and possibly Santana are top players that the Yankees threw the most money at. Oh yeah...Babe Ruth. You have to remember the Yankees are the best and most hated franchise in sports. Which is why I'm happy Abreu is hitting lousy, Clemens pitched horrid, Damon's going downhill, A-Rod can't hit in the playoffs, and Santana will probably go to the Red Sox. Chuck Knoblach.

I am a Dodgers fan that believes the Yankees don't have to defend themselves spending money to build solid teams. That option is available to every other owner if they elect to do so. Yankees fans should be happy that their team is willing to do these kinds of things to field a winning team every year, and shame on the other owners not willing to spend money for a winner for their fans.

they yankees have money and they do buy a lot look at the new a-rod deal that is lot of money and on posada who is not young, the yankees buy a lot but recently haven't got a lot, so it doesn't really matter if they spend money because they haven't won a world series in quite a while, so really who cares bout them spending money.

becaue they have a 200+ million dollar payroll and for a while got every big time free agent. that is why people say they buy everything. my advice is just be happy your favorite team is willing and able to spend big bucks to bring you a good team.
