Last night I was driving home and like 6 adults racoons were crawling out of a drainange hole on a busy street in my samll OR city. Their habitat has been destroyed as this entire area was brush and trees etc and it has been bull dozed down and they are rapidly building condos etc. What can i do to help them "Move" to another location, I am sure they are freaked out and have lost their entire "place to live" They were about to run across our new road that is now very very busy. Is there a way to help them "move further out into the surrounding country side before they get hit by cars :( A huge animal lover who went back, it was after dark and threw all my fruit etc. out so they wouldn't cross the road. I know very little about racoons, except to stay away as they can be dangerous. thanks for kind advice

You might just want to call your local humane society and explain, see if they have anyone in their contact list who could trap and relocate the critters.

Actually, no there is no way to move the racoons from one place to another that would work on the long term. This phenomenon is called encroachment and happens everywhere. You could potentially for the short term lead them to a more remote location using the breadcrumb method of a trail of food, but as soon as somebody reproduces, you stop feeding, etc. they or others will return.

I wouldn't worry too much. Racoons are smart animals and will adapt quickly (or die trying). This will be a famine situation for them, but once people move in it will be feast time given that most don't do much to keep racoons out of their garbage.

...Be careful around racoons; they can have rabies. Though mainly nocturnal, it is not unusual for them to come out during the day. Some say that if they come out during the day it means they are rabid, but this is not necessarily true.
...RE moving the racoons: Check with Mayflower Van Lines and Interstate Van Lines - they may have special rates for racoons.
