Certainly a game, though a brilliant beautiful game.

Chess has been referred to as the Game of Kings. It is not really a sport, although there are international competions and sometimes teams. I've never seen chess cheerleaders. 8-)

Chess was initially not intended as either a game NOR a sport. It was started back in ancient Persia as a way to teach young soldiers to think stragicaly as a training tool.

I think games are sports and sports are games. there are both physical and mental aspects to baseball and chess. the chess pieces in chess play the same role as bats, gloves, and a ball in baseball. thats what i like to think at least :)

True, chess is a sport. Why wouldn't it be? Chess is something that requires studying to be good, along with practice. It is simply not a sport that requires a player to be a certain size and weight.

It depends on definition of sport. If you include golf by not needing athleticism, you have to include chess. If you need athleticism you cut out chess and Golf. (C'mon, John Daly is an athlete?)
The same is true for competitive eating, poker, the spelling bee, etc.
Which fits your definition of sport more, chess or figure skating? (The French judge says...:))

I would definitely say just a game. For me to consider something a sport there has to be some physical exertion.

I wouldn't call it a sport. How often do you hear people say "I'm going to the chess club to work out on my endgame"?
Never.
How often do you see cute girl cheerleaders for the chess team?
Never.
When do you see a stadium packed with 50,000 people watching two guys playing chess?
Never.
