I think it was the day Charles de Gaulle proclaimed Quebec should be free. The Great Depression and the Second World War were important the world over. But when de Gaulle gave a nudge to the Separatists, Canada went through some changes that still are having repercussions today. His statement in 1967 of "Vive le Québec libre!" was bold, and coming from a non-Canadian, quite a meddling and controversial statement wouldn't you say? Whether or not you agree or disagree with it, you must acknowledge the importance of it and the lasting effects of it.

So if you are looking in terms of Canada, de Gaulle's visit was huge. Just look at the changes in Quebec and how those changes spiraled out to the other provinces. For instance, since de Gaulle visited, how many Canadian Prime Ministers have not been able to speak French?

So in answer to your question, I would have to say it was World War II, because World War II sowed the seeds which brought de Gaulle to power in France and made him a worldwide figure. Some say the depression laid the seeds for World War II, but I dispute that. Japan, Russia and Italy had militant dictators before the Great Depression. World War II brought the world out of the depression and led to the prominence of de Gaulle. So as far as important effects, between the two, I would choose World War II.

Politically and socially, the second world war was the beginning of the separation of Canada from the UK.

I would think the beginning of its independence would be far more important than the Depression.

Of the two choices, I'd say the second world war as that is was distinguished us a a country.

Though, I think the Avro Program was monumental. We were world leaders, we did amazing things, then we buckled to the USA, destroyed out our accomplishments and essentially created NASA.... for no recognition!
