I would say that it depends more on the competence of the Astrologer, than the differences in the systems at this point. Both systems could be improved. Western astrology may be more open to inovation, however.

The first thing you will notice when you compare a Western and Vedic chart is that the Vedic chart looks very different.
Many of us (those in the U.S.) are probably familiar with the round shape of a Western chart; the Vedic chart is square. If you are familiar with Western astrology, upon careful examination, the Vedic chart will appear to have planets aligned with the wrong constellations (signs).
For example, suppose, according to Western astrology, your Sun sign is in Capricorn. In the Vedic system, it could be in Sagittarius. Your rising sign and the other planets might also be in unfamiliar signs.
However, this does not mean that either one is inaccurate. It simply calculates a horoscope differently. The interpretations are most often more precise than in Western astrology.
Western astrology emphasizes the psychological nature of the individual. Vedic astrology also defines a person's psychological nature, but it gives more focus to understanding when certain events are likely to take place.
For this reason, some people prefer vedic astrology for predictions.
Vedic astrology gives a better view of:
1. A person's karmic tendencies
2. When such tendencies are likely to manifest for that person.
The times of life events are shown through a detailed system of planetary time cycles, called "dashas." There is no corresponding method in Western astrology. However, competent western astrologers will use a system planetary progressions plus transit charts to look at future events.
Western predictive astrology is a very complex analysis and many people don't take the time to study it properly, vedic is a little easier in the predictive realm (with perhaps the exception of the western horary question).
Western astrologers who make a study of it, often find themselves converting to Vedic astrology because of its greater scope, depth and accuracy for predicting the future.
I've known several western astrologers who have changed systems.
So the case in point, is that they both have their values. I won't say one is 'better' than the other, because they address different issues, and they both have a place in the mystery studies. I simply strive to point out why the two systems differ, for those who may have an interest.
Addendum to address the note by the poster jiloth7 on the western house systems being incorrect above 66 degrees. That is where the Koch house system comes in, which is used instead of the placidius house system in western astrology.

Astrology is based on generalizations and has major difficulties including forecasting for people who come from multiple births (ie; twins, triplets, etc.).
It is a very poor barometer to guide your life by and should be shunned by everyone.
Other weaknesses in Astrology include:
The Heliocentric system as opposed to the Geocentric system - planets revolving around the sun - not the earth.
The Mystery of the Missing Planets - Uranus, Neptune and Pluto - discovered after early astrologers believed only seven planets including the sun and the moon were in our solar system.
The Missing Horoscopes of the Arctic - Above the Arctic Circle (66 degrees latitude) astrologers find it nearly impossible to calculate precisely what constellation or zodiacal point is rising on the horizon - so that Alaskans, Greenlanders, Finns, Norwegian, Siberians and even Northern Canadians have no planetary influence to determine their lives.
Speed and Refraction of Light - When calculating the planetary positions astronomers make no allowance for the velocity of light.
Others include: Diametrically opposite predictions, The test of opposite destinies and the procession of the equinoxes.

Not at all.The Indian Astrology takes into account numerous factors which are unknown to Western Astrology.....in fact, there's no such scope at all to study any horoscope as accurately as the Indian system is capable of.
Just take this........Rashi; Lagna; Dasha;Antardasha;........Yogas(many of them), the stars and planets....the degree of strength of each planet and the combinations etc.
In reality , there can be the following different varieties among men and phases during the life time of anyone if we take just four factors into account........n th root of (12x12x12x27x1200) ; here n=4.This can be much more if we take others factors into consideration.
Indian astrology can explain many aspects of persons born on the same date and place ...... showing distinctly different characters and interpretations.
Western astrology is mainly concerned with the zodiac sign and some numbers(which is limited to 9).With lot of other factors , the details are found to be limited and hence the interpretation can't be as accurate as the Indian Astrology.

I have experience of astrologers of both school of thoughts and I found that vedic astrologers are much more specific and accurate in their predictions.Even not so veteran vedic astrologers predict correctly. A few astrologers in India have made this science a way of earning their living and they are bringing a bad name to it.Western astrologers do well in describing the nature and traits of the enquirer.

No- Vedic astrology is the original astrology and science of ones karma from previous lives and western astrology is a take off and not bonafide astrology. It is only a partial reading of ones chart.

Additional to vedas, hindu scritptures have the following literature.
Vedang's section
Vyakaran
Jyotish
Nirukt
Shiksha
Chand
Kalpa Sutras
Upved
1. Arthved (science of economics)
2. Dhanurved (Science of war)
3. Gandharved (science of music)
4. Ayurved (science of Medicine)
So you can see that our Astrology comes under Jyotish.
All our scriptures are verses from God. The subject is so deep and accurate. It has been followed for 1000's of years. It deals every subject of Jyotism (astrology, palmstry and numerology and nadi jyothism).
Since it is from verses and from god, it is definitely accurate.
Western astrology is something which is taken from here and given back to us in generalising the aspects.

@R.Kashyap Astrology is a true and an accurate science. it needs genius Mathematical skills and intuition to correctly predict events. Nowadays astrologers are 70-80% correct since the exact birth time of the native is wrong in minutes and seconds. so more accurate the birth time greater the accuracy. Where did you find that Brahmi Preceded Sanskrit?? I want to study this source to "Enlighten" myself. Brahmi was popular and it originated during the last phase of BC and early CE. Who told that Alexander Invaded India? please quote source. i have proof that babylonians and the greeks imported the vedic astrology from the Sub Continent. Please contact if you want a debate.

The technique and methods used to determine the positioning of planets and their consequent effect gives rise to different systems. Astrological sages in India offered an innovative solution to this complex problem of movement of different bodies and the moving frame of reference by defining a Fixed Zodiac. This system is called "Nirayana or Indian System". In the Nirayana system, the Zodiac or celestial circle is assumed to be a fixed one. The Indian system uses mathematical models and makes it possible to calculate, analyze and interpret to the desired level of accuracy progressively.
The Western or Sayana or Moving zodiac system makes calculations and predictions based on the so-called present position of the stellar system. This has limitations as in the present scientific world, there is no way of defining the current position of ever moving celestial body zodiac.
The difference between Sayana longitudes and Nirayana longitudes of planets is called "Ayanamsa" or precision. Sayana system is at best a crude first order approximation. Nirayana system is an innovative solution to a complex situation.
The Sayana system uses techniques of approximation and progressive accuracy in predictions is not possible.
When we compare the Indian Astrology with that of the Western Astrology there are certain general principles found in both the systems. Ownership of houses, exaltation, debilitation, characteristics of planets and the 12 aspects of human life are the same
In certain other aspects they differ from each other. For example the square opposition aspects are bad and trine and sextile aspects are always good in Western Astrology. Where as in the Hindu system good and bad aspects are not based on the types of aspects, but by the nature of the planets involved in the aspects. Ashtakavarga system, Shadvarga charts, Shadbala assessment and Yogavali are not found in the Western System.
The Indian Science of Astrology also gives certain remedial measures to overcome mental, moral and physical sufferings by means of medicinal roots, mantras and yoga practices and Gemstones. Though Hindu Astrology deals with all the aspects of human life indicating materialistic success and failures, it is deeply rooted in philosophy
The Sayana system of generic predictions is based on Sun signs. The sun sign is closely related with the date of birth. In contrast, calculation of moon sign is more complex and cannot be determined with simple dates from the Gregorian calendar.
Vedic Indian astrological system uses many more complex calculations. The Lagna, Birth Star and several other parameters relating to each individual is determined by processing the horoscope for the specific date and place of birth. For instance, the branch of Vedic Indian astrology dealing with only Muhurtams or determining auspicious time for doing any important activity is followed extensively for starting important activities. Like wise, marriage compatibility is a separate branch in Indian astrology and many parameters dealing with compatibility of prospective groom and bride are analyzed. All these subsystems in Indian Astrology are based on complex calculations from birth particulars.
Another system of delineation in Vedic Astrology are aspects known as "yogas". This is a unique system for understanding the power of the associations between the planets in their placement from one another. When the planets form yogas, they create specific results which are powerful
The Dasa System (the planetary cycles) is a unique feature of the Vedic system which indicates a period during which a planet´s influence becomes fully operative. This enables one to give precise predictions during a particular period.
Predictions based on Vedic astrology are more accurate and specific than those based on sun sign or moon sign. All these sign based predictions are generic. For example- using Nirayana Sun Signs, all persons born between 15/2 to 14/3 fall into the sign of Aquarius. They would have a certain set of traits or characteristics. However, while using moon signs two persons though born on 15/2 in the same year but at different times may have different birth stars. Predictions based on Vedic astrology are accurate. Here Lagna is first determined. Further Lagna varies in every two hours and also with place of birth. This gives very different, traits/personalities and unlike Sun signs makes it possible to categorize the traits of every individual in depth.
