If you're having a lot of trouble with the computer randomly crashing and the power supply is a cheap no name unit then replacing it can often fix the problem (crap power supplies typically can't provide stable voltages on the rails and so when they don't provide enough components will just stop working causing the system to freeze up).

Replacing the power supply itself isn't such a big deal, you just unplug everything from it, unscrew the screws holding it to the case, remove it, get the new one and stick that in and then plug everything into it (just make sure you don't drop the power supply onto the cards onto the inside of the computer when you're removing or installing it).

If you've got a cheap crap power supply then you probably should be replacing it because the failure rate of those is alarmingly high and they tend to destroy most of the rest of your computer when they fail (good power supplies pretty much never fail and when they do they don't tend to take the rest of the computer with them).

Generally speaking, the power supply is pretty rugged and won't die on you during the life of your PC.

There are other elements inside that may also cause problems, but without a list of symptoms that are causing this concern, there is no way to pinpoint where the problem lies.

If a computer service person told you to buy a new power supply, take your computer to someone else and get a 2nd opinion.

If you DO need a new power supply, take the PC to a professional, which you might consider doing, in either case, in order to alleviate any concerns you may have. After all, it's easy to damage the internal components of a computer if you aren't careful. Static electricity is one of the biggest dangers, and you can't control that without a wrist-grounding strap.

Good luck with your computer.

First sign would be that the fan of power supply stops running and system does not start up. That is the first indication that the power supply is down.

actually, the first sign will be this funny smell that happens. Its like electronics frying. If you are around when it happens you will notice it.

Then it will just go dead. Power button won't turn it on. Fortunately, its like a 10 minute process to replace one and not a big deal.
