If you think about this, you will find that he is 5 km South of the starting point and 4 km west (as he travelled 12km west, but only 8km east).

So we have a pythagoras problem....
x^2 = 5^2 + 4^2 = 41
x = sqrt 41 = 6.4km

The bearing is worked out by using sin....

6.4 * sin theta = 4
sin theta = 4 / 6.4

theta = sin^-1 (4/6.4) = 38.68 degrees. But if you want the bearing - this is given as if you were facing North, so we now must add 180 degrees, which gives, 218.68 degrees.

So he is 6.4km away on a bearing of 218.68 degrees from his starting point.

Do you mean "Physical Education?" Physics is a mixture of science and mathematics, not physical activities done for health and fitness. Unless you have a physical disability, there is no reason why you should even be thinking about getting out of this class. Exercise should be an extremely important aspect of everyone's lives and you should feel priviledged that your school hasn't cut Physical Education from its budget, like many schools have had to do.

One thing that you have to keep in mind is that while all East-west lines will be parallel,North-south lines(meridiens) will not be parallel to each other.

----------->Start
------------------/ |
-----------------/- | 5km
---------------/--- |
-----------End---
-------------- 4km

4^2+5^2=x^2
square root of 41km (6.4031km) is the magnitude and 5km south and 4km west is direction.

i think!?
