I see our race getting more and more ignorant and wonder how that happened. Human curiosity and innovation have gotten us to the point we are now, but now things seem to be regressing. There are still technological advances being made, but the group of people making them keeps getting smaller. Meanwhile, the average person on the street knows more about video game characters or what's going on with Britney Spears that who the vice-president of the U.S. is. I read a story just yesterday that in a test (by Harvard - I think) a chimpanzee scored better on a memory test than a group of college students. I fear that you may be right that humans are on course for extinction in the next million or so years (if not sooner).

I couldn't agree more!! Indeed, your linking of human values to survival of the species is deeply insightful and strikingly apt.
What I observe is that all human values that were evolved for our emancipation and balanced collective wellbeing, have no longer remained steadfast values and instead have turned into momentary and situational responses out of impulsive emotions....... because of utter materialism that primarily breeds short term and quantitative approach. Values turning into hypocritical show of emotions at convenient situations implies the death of wisdom. And no matter how much superior our intelligence, it can not save us from extinction without the harness of wisdom to control and mold it into collectively and cumulatively positive outcome..... on the contrary, superior intelligence being the double-edged sword that it is, can dangerously hasten up the disaster if not accompanied with wisdom...... unfortunately the superiority of intelligence does not automatically translate to wisdom or wellbeing!!
My only hope is that the utter materialism is self-destructive.... hence in our journey on the curve up on the materialistic scale, a stage may come when we may find it oppressive enough to change course..... if that happens, then of course the human values would once again become steadfast and prominent and the danger of extinction would be averted.

I still hold faith in humanity turning itself around and the world becoming a more peaceful, loving place to live. If we give up on our faith, then the world has no hope left.

There are good people and the bad ones. History is the witness, good people have always won. So I have faith in humanity to survive.

Easy answers are not always wrong... but often, the easiest answers are the ones that somehow support our emotional inclinations. If we feel passionately about something or someone, we will immediately prefer the explanation that confirms our feelings. But sometimes we project our opinions on to situations where very different criteria ought to apply. You now feel very sure about something. Think again. Really question your own certainty. If it doesn't go away, trust it. If it does, revise it.

I don't have faith in humanity - but ihave n the individual human being.
Lack of inner peace in the individual leads to the problems of humanity - which is made up of individuals.
Hitler, idi ameen, mother Theresa were individuals. - not humanity.

Honestly, I don't know.
Analytically, it's always a possibility that human beings can overcome their genetic instincts and come together.
