I doubt the Red Sox are getting Johan. If the Yankees are serious and are really backing out, then do you really think the Red Sox will offer up Ellsbury or Lester? As soon as the Yankees pursue and sign another pitcher, the Sox will pull Ellsbury from the bargain.
And there's no way the Twins would accept a deal from the Sox if it doesn't include Lester and/or Ellsbury. I believe the Twins will end up keeping Santana through 2008, while the Yankees sign either Haren or Bedard. Then come 2009, I think the Yankees will snag him as a free agent.

Apparently, the Red Sox are really close to signing Santana. The Sox and Twins management have sent each other medical records of Santana and Lester back and forth.
As a Toronto resident and Blue Jay fan... I truly hate both the Red Sox and Yanks. Haha. The whole no salary cap thing is lame.
Anyways, I think the Yankees still have a chance. There's no way you can count out a team with A-Rod, Jeter, Abreu, Posada, Matsui, Damon, Giambi... although their pitching is a little suspect, having Wang, Mussina, Joba, and the 4-5 good prospects is still very good; just not compared to Boston. Then there's still the time left before the season ends... Yankees seem to be involved with every trade rumor or free agent signing... they still might get Dan Haren... Ben Sheets is on the block... same with Erik Bedard... etc.
Boston's pitching looks really really good, but I still dont think their offence is really that great. They did well last year, but I think Lowell will come back down to earth, Drew'll still suck; basically, everybody but Manny and Big Papi might suck next year.
So Yankees do have a chance... they seem to have a chance every year. Hopefully, the Jays can do some miraculous baseball and contend with the Sox and Yanks.

To say the Sox wouldn't win a championship with Johan doesn't even make sense....getting Johan obviously doesn't guarantee a championship but it sure would help...if the Sox added Santana they would have the best rotation in the majors...they would be the odds on favorite to win the A.L. East and another World Series but that doesn't mean they will...any team can take the division (that is why they play the games) but I think if the Sox add Johan it would be a lot harder for another team to beat them for the division title...money can buy a championship....you just have to spend wisely.

Whatever team wins the Santana sweepstakes is not guaranteed a championship or even a playoff spot. There is no question he is a great pitcher but he will be only one piece of the puzzle and everyone has to perform for a team to win. There is always a chance for injuries and also some players having an off year. There is a very fine line between winning and losing but I would definitely want Santana on my team and I would take my chances.

First maybe you need to state which team you mean, even if iy is odvoius, thre are the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. Do you think it will be possible that either of these 2 teams, will get Santana? Maybe maybe not, so far it doesn't even know for sure where he will end up going. Now the Yankees still might have a chance at the diversion either way, but it will all depend on how they do, and even how Boston Red Sox does. And usually it has been the Yankees that have been the better team, but now maybe not so.

He is a piece to their puzzle but does not guarantee anything. He could very easily get injured or tons of other people could get injured and then they are back at square one. He is a fabulous pitcher no doubt and is a staff changer for any team but at the same time you still have to stay healthy and perfomr on the field and we have seen players inthe past fall apart after big trades and big contracts so there is not a lead pipe lock on this! If I am either team I do what it take to get him though!

I consider you one hundred%. AL necessary: Tigers/Indians/Twins all interior the race for the pennet with the Tigers preferable the way. seek for the Twins to ask your self lots of individuals this season with in my opinion a lineup merely as solid as in 2006 as quickly as we gained the AL necessary over the Tigers in spite of the departures of Santana, Silva, Castillo, Hunter, Bartlett, Garza.... NL EAST: The Mets with Santana are the team to overcome interior the NL, regardless of the undeniable fact that I nevertheless dont think of that they might make it into the playoffs in any of the AL divisions. additionally, i think of that the winner of the international sequence this 365 days will come from the AL necessary, in spite of Boston, huge apple (Yankees and Mets), and the Angels recuperating lots over the offseason.

Even if the Yankees get Santana, they'll have no chance in the division. They've been breaking the bank to re-sign their aging stars, yet let go the one guy that was most responsible for there comeback last season (Joe Torre).

I think the Yanks should go with the young guys also. They have showed that they can't win by spending the money on washed up pitchers. They have to bolster their bullpen to stand a chance.
