It's difficult to give the most expensive country, because the cost of living varies hugely within a country.

For example, the cost of living in London is way above that of Manchester. Similar differences exist between Paris and Clermont Ferrand.

So cost of living is more usually based on cities. In that case, the list is as follows (source, the Economist) :

1 – Oslo, Norway
2 – Paris, France
3 – Copenhagen, Denmark
4 – London, UK
5 – Tokyo, Japan
6 – Osaka, Japan
7 – Reykjavik, Iceland
8 – Zurich, Switzerland
9 – Frankfurt, Germany
=9 – Helsinki, Finland

I have to say I find the results a bit dubious. I've lived both in London and Paris and I cab say from personal experience that Paris is by far the cheaper of the two.

Most of you seem to have forgotten that although for example Norway is expensive to us Brits and some other countries, the Norwegians don't find it so, as they have salalries to match. ie about 3 times uk. I have lived in Copenhagen and Oslo. The same applies to many other 'expensive' countries. Also the questioner stated, 'IN EUROPE' Japan and Canada are not in Europe. YET!!! Carrie- I would put Denmark as the cheapest of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, not much more expensive than London.
