Yo,

I would give these bands a try:

Magnum - early albums
Ian Gillian's solo albums
Cheap Trick - from the 70's
Golden Earing
Spooky Tooth
Joe Walsh - the early albums
Marillion - early albums
Triumph - early albums

also try the real classics, such as Vanilla Fudge, Iron Butterfly, early Jeff Beck and Robin Thrower albums, Mountain, Humble Pie and early Wishbone Ash
70's area Lonnie Mack, Ten Years After

I would also try out some classic NWOBHM bands, such as
Tygers Of Pan Tang, Angel Witch, Saracen, Fastway, Persian Risk, Mythra, Grim Ripper, Atomkraft, Starfighters, Demon, Tank, Sweet Savage, Satan, Tokyo Blade, White Spirit, Jaguar, Elixer, Blind Fury and Diamond Head..

Enjoy!

I 2nd Van Der Graaf Gen'.! BIG Time! - But an slightly easier starting point might be "Godbluff".

"like where do i start with the likes of yes and genesis?"

With Yes, get any or all of the "Yes holy trinity": The Yes Album", "Fragile" &/or "Close to the Edge".

Genesis: "Trick of the Tail", "Foxtrot".

Have you tried more of Rush's catalogue? They're My specialty! :)

ELP- Tarkus, Brain Salad Surgery

Jethro Tull- Aqualung

Mike Oldfield: Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge

Genesis: Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot. These are gems from the very early 70's.

David Bowie- The Man Who Sold The World. Very dark

Alic Cooper: Love It To Death

Judas Priest- Stained Class

The Who- Tommy , Quadrophenia. They have their critics but I recommend both. I think they are great

These are albums you might have to find at a vintage vinyle shop but they are all good from start to finish!

The Nice - Elegy
Spirogyra (NOT the lame jazzers) - St Radigunds
VanDer Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts (a bit weird, but it grows on you)

I got a box full of vinyl prog albums from my Dad's friend when I was about 13 and I never recovered !
