A friend suggested that I couldn't light candles that were right next to my mirror as the heat would warp or crack the glass. Does anyone know if that's true?

While that's possible it's highy unlikely unless your talking about some kind of super candles. The candles put out a very small flame and the candle itself would keep the flame far enough away to make it harmless. Try this: simply put your hand next to the candle (like the mirror would be), you'll see that you can hold your hand there. If your hand can handle the heat a mirror certainly can. Most of the candle's heat it above the flame not on the side.

depends on the size of the candles, and how close you put them to the mirror, 2 or 3 inches away should be OK,
But don,t be surprised if the mirror goes to pieces, from seeing the candle flame naked

it can happen..heat always cracks glass if it gets too hot...sometimes those little glass cups will crack if the flame from a candle gets too hot.
