I don't have a student loan, I decided I didn't want to be in debt when I got out of uni because you have to buy houses and stuff, so I worked my way through. So I've not really had a chance to save, but I'm working on a placement this year so going to stash all I can away while I'm earning!

Generally student loans aren't large enough to allow anyone to waste money; most students I know spend theirs on such frivolous expenditures like textbooks and laundry. However, I have met a few over the years who worked to make the money they needed and put their loan money into investments that paid more than the interest rate on the loan, with the goal of being able to buy a house when they graduated from the university.

I spent mine on paying back previous debts, books and the majority of it went on clothes, shoes, going out and being a general student! I wish I'd have saved it and I'd have a nice deposit for my flat by now and scrimped my way through uni instead!

my son is his 2nd year and because he is in London has a good grant he does not have to pay back - this of course does not include his tuition - he is very careful with his money and does not indulge in fripperies - last year he had enough left over from his grant to buy himself a new comp - it can be done
