This was on the news this morning as there is a line in the full length version which is offensive to scottish folk - sorry I was half asleep and can't recall the actual words.

I personally think we should scrap the whole thing and start again, its truly awful and the worst of the bunch.

who's with me?

I agree. The full length National Anthem which does run to about 17 verses does have 1 verse about subduing the Scots. I have never like the National Anthem and would be happy to see it changed to something a bit more rousing. Personally i would have either "Land of Hope and Glory" or "Jerusalem".....
Failing that he "Dads Army theme tune"....

The line, as I am sure someone else will have told you is:
"General Wade Rebellious Scots to crush".
It was a dirge to a German King anyway. They should do what Billy Connolly suggested & change the tune for the Natoinal Anthem with that from The Archers.

Let's be fair on this one it's not a British national anthem it's an English one as any lines about "crushing the rebellious Scots" cannot really be called a British national anthem. As far as I'm concerned lets forget that one and have a national anthem for each of the home nations.

If you were talking about a football anthem, that would be fine. If you are talking about the National Anthem, the word
tradition comes to mind and yes I would object strongly.

Haven't you mentioned this subject, in an earlier question?
Maybe you should move to a country that has an anthem more to your liking.
I believe the one in Sudan may suit you.

It's too long ago for me to remember all the words, had to when I was at school, but seem to remember that some of the verses weren't too bad considering when they were written. The part about the Scots referred to crushing the "rebellious" ones, let's hope that doesn't refer to them all.

This is the controversial verse:

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!

It's a terrible song anyway and could probably do with an update.

I am all for changing the words of the national anthem. But only when the Queen dies and Charles takes over then it will be changed to 'God Save The King'.

God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.

Change Queen to Team and you have a footie song

An additional verse is occasionally sung:

Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign.
May she defend our laws,
And give us ever cause,

on the history channel they said it was a french tune if so we should change it, A nice long one that last about 20 minutes and then when we win gold we could gloat more

It is absolutely pants, so depressing, hardly uplifting in the sporting arena and worst of all completely irrelevant in this day and age!!

Lets be sensible about this people and lobby in the correct manner to press for a change.
