Would a - DVI male to 2 female - splitter cable be OK for 2 monitors, or would a Switch Box be better (i.e. would a splitter cable lose power)?

Normally a Spliter cable is used to sent the same picture to two different monitors. If that is what you want to do, use a splitter. You will lose some signal going to each of the monitors. But else you are travelling more the 20 feet or so, you should not notice it.

A swtich box is used the opposite of a splitter. It allows you to hook two different computers to one monitor. Not what it sounds like you are trying to do.
