As broad as the question is my first thought was "read Viktor Frankl's book "Mans Search for Meaning". It's not very long and will make a far better statement about humanity than I ever could. He was a Holocaust survivor who managed to maintain hope, sanity and find meaning in his existence while in a concentration camp.

thats a really broad question. Im not to keen on philosophy but i guess to me humanity is simply a concept that was developed by intellectuals meant to contain the basic animalistic nature of humans by defining it as a "civilized" way of behaving. You know what i mean? I guess what im saying is to me "humanity" is synonymous with "civilized" and what you describe to be humanistic is based upon what your perception of what civilized is....

But i think its also a contradictory term because there is always the basic idea that humans are indeed inherently evil beings that can only do their best to suppress those evil emotions and desires thereby making us who we are. Just like heart of darkness. So maybe humanity is evil....
