Soundcards that plug into a PCI slot are pretty cheap.

BUT are you really sure it was damaged. Driver may have just been deleted. OR you reformatted the drive, installed the OS but did not install the chipset driver that would usually include the sound card driver. Try reinstalling driver.

Yes you can get USB based cards. You must however still do an add hardware wizrd run to see if it's just not the drivers that have gone missing. Onboard sound cards don't fry so easily. Anyway, since you haven't mentioned if it's notebook or desktop PC that you're using...I'm assuming it's a desktop PC...so here goes.

Order a USB sound card online--search for Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1..that's a good deal for around $ 25-30. Open up your cabinet, search for you sound card slot--it should normally be the one right above or beneath where your modem/lan card slot is. Fix it properly..log on to windows..you should get the New Hardware Found pop-up, insert your driver CD, point to you CD ROM drive in the add hardware wizard and finish the installation. That should do it. DOn't forget to check in Control Panel(under SOunds and Audio devices) that the default Output and Input device is selected as your NEW card. You should be set now.

Because it is an "onboard" - "integrated" sound card you cannot fix it if it is damaged. Maybe the driver has been uninstalled. Try reloading the driver, if you do not have a motherboard disc you can download a driver from some sites. If the onboard sound card is damaged you can buy a sound card and fix it into a spare slot. ( If you have a modem card inside your computer near where it is fitted)

You can always slap on a PCI or USB based add-on sound card; just tell Windows to channel audio data to it and ignore the fried onboard one.
