Well... Rowling did mention in her interview what the 4 main characters end up doing when they grow up
Harry & Ron both become Aurors,
Hermione is in the Magical Law Enforcement Dept. (Not sure of the position),
and Ginny plays Quidditch for the Holyhead Harpies. At a later stage she becomes the Senior Quidditch correspondent at the Daily Prophet

It wasn't specified in the book but I think he works for the Ministry as an Auror. It was stated that he would like to just be that once he leaves Hogwarts
