A friend of mine just callled me and said that he left a candle burning at work at 5pm. It's a fairly large candle in a glass holder. The glass has a small crack at the bottom. It's been burning for about 14 hours. He is worried that it will burn his building down because of the crack. What are the odds of this happening? THanks!

There's always a risk....
My aunt had a candle on her living room table...stepped out for...5 minutes, maybe, came back in to see her living room on fire because there was a hairline crack in the candle jar

Candle fires start when a candle tips over. I doubt anything bad is going to happen. If the candle burns all the way down, it will put itself out because there is no more wax to burn. I have left candles burning all night long and never had a problem. I am not recommending doing this, but I don't think he has burned down the building.

Where does he work that he is allowed to burn candles? I would think that is a fire code violation.

The odds are very good. The glass will get too hot and will eventually burn down and just be heating the glass and it will crack. Your only supposed to burn a candle for 2-3 hours at a time. I had a glass crack on me one time and one time the candle burnt out and it was on a wooden table and it left a burn mark on the table.

Good chance. The glass could get hot and completely crack, and the hot candle could burn into whatever surface it is on. That happened to me once but I caught it in time to prevent real damage..But if it burns down to the bottom and there is no more wax left, it might just go out, and your friend would get lucky. I would go to the building and if he sees smoke coming out of it, call the fire department! Maybe someone cleaning the building saw it and put it out.
