The first migration of Jews out of Israel was during the time of Jacob when the family went down to Egypt during a time of famine in the land of Israel.

Historically, the main cause of Jewish dispersion had been due to invasions by other nations into Israel.

There have been larger Jewish communities outside of Israel going back to the Babylonian Captivity (around 400 BCE). But the most recent, and current Jewish "exile" is considered from the time of the Roman conquest - the reigns of emperors Trajan and Hadrian.

Since that time until the establishment of the modern state in 1948 there were always Jews living in the land of Israel.
In fact, Jerusalem has had a majority Jewish population since the mid-1800's.

RE:
What caused the diaspora? Why were the Jews scattered before the restoration of Israel in 1948?

~As to your first question, it's simply a matter of the traditional Jewish condition and their historic inability to fend off conquering foes. As to the second, hmmm, let me think: that is a poser. Ah, I've got it - I think - THE diaspora is commonly accepted to have occurred with the conquest and expulsion of the Jews in the 8th-6th century BCE. Modern Israel was belatedly created in accordance with the Balfour Declaration in 1948. By a few minutes, give or take a millenia or three, the diaspora came first - by a nose. Duh and oyveh.

Now wait a minute before you give me a thumbs down for what you deem to be an anti-Semitic reply. Did I even mention the Aramaeans, the Arabs or Ethiopia? Obviously your misplaced pseudo racial pejorative is inappropriate here.

Yo, Oscar, check me on this one.

Hey, bcptm, what can I say? Sometimes, lightening will strike. When you're right, you're right. I've got nothing to add. Maybe Bondservant will jump in with his two cents, but I can't say a thing.
