you chose "Save" instead of "Run this file from its current location", you need to locate the file MsnMsgs.Msi on your computer. To do this:
Click the Start button and then click Search (or Find) and look under the files and folders category.
Type the filename MsnMsgs.Msi then click Search Now (or Find Now)
To install the program, double-click MsnMsgs.Msi and follow the instructions
What if I have problems installing the program?
Try the following:
Ensure that no other programs are running. Sometimes it helps to close as many programs as possible before trying to install the program. To close programs, right-click the program icons and select either Close or Exit.
Make sure that your browser files from Internet Explorer are OK. Other programs can sometimes write over or corrupt these files. To run MSN Messenger, you may want to upgrade, reinstall, or fix them. See Help in Internet Explorer for more information.
Click here to go to the Internet Explorer Web Site.
Make sure you have the proper permissions to install applications on your computer, if you're using Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. If you are unsure about what permissions you have on your computer, contact your system administrator for more information.

Hello,
(ANS) It sounds very like your computer is set up in such a way that your windows user profile doesn't have the "permissions" to allow you to make major or important changes to the system which would also include not allowing you to install software.
**You would have to be set up as a member of the power users group or administrators users group before you can install software on this machine.
**User profiles are added to user groups in windows, each user group has predefined or preset permissions which determine what users of that group can or cannot do.
**Your username & password are a part of your user profile in windows, any changes you make to windows during a session are saved & stored in your profile so for example when you next log in you get your same familiar desktop wallpaper or desktop icons etc.
**Thus you may NOT have enough permissions to install or run the MSN set up process on your system. Meaning you either have to have your permissions changed for you by the system administrator or have to get someone else with higher level permissions to install the program for you.

I had this problem. I suspect it is because I am running an "illegal " copy of Windows. I could download the MSN prog but it would not install. Is your Windows fully legal ? ie Microsoft certified.

You have to be more specific.
What operating system are you using?
Are you using a company laptop?
Do you have administrative rights?
Answer these questions and I might be able to assit you further.
