It depends on the University. Usually the professor/TA will report it to school administration such as Student Judicial Affairs and let them sort out the business as well as give you a failing grade. I believe administration will give you a second chance before expulsion, but it depends on how serious the offense is. Usually community service will be added for the 1st offense. This may all be different depending on what university you go to.

The penalties differ some what at each college or university but none of them are good. If it is a simple plagiarism (i.e. you forgot to put a cited paragraph in quotes) then it's handled by your professor and it will merely affect your grade. If it is a major plagiarism (i.e. you bought an essay on-line) then it's handled by the administration of the university and you could lose your student status at the university and then have to re-apply to the university in order to continue. It's also against the law in some states and you could be looking at a fine and/or jail time.

Different universities have different policies, but none take it lightly. At the very least, a student who plagiarizes receives an F for the paper and usually for the course. At worst, s/he is expelled from the university altogether.

Don't know exactly, but I think it depends on what assignment that is. If you wrote a diploma work and was found fiddling, you'd be asked to rewrite your work. Anyway, it's all done by the Unyversity internal processes. You might want to look at them at your Uni's website.
