It has to do with their chemical makeup.
Humans breathe in oxygen and breathe out Carbon Dioxide,
while most plant life does just the opposite.
Dragons on the other hand breathe in oxygen and Carbon Dioxide and
with the chemcal changes in their bodies,
when they become angry or feel threatened
they breathe out fire,
much the same as when a small child throws a temper tantrums.
As Dragons age they learn to control the fire,
just as children learn to control their tempers.
I hope this clears up any misconceptions
that you have been forced to read
from other sources.

They breath in carbon dioxide, and much like plants, breathe out oxygen. To ignite it, they create a small spark in the back of their throat which instantly makes the oxygen burt into flames, viola, magical fire.

Current European laws restricting emmission of greenhouse gasses and other polutants have effectively precluded this activity amongst dragons. It is still possible to fit a catalytic converter to the dragon but they tend to object to having a large metal tube rammed up each nostril. In developing countries, China in particular, overall atmospheric polution is so severe that dragon fire is as yet uncontrolled.

They have propane canisters in their cheeks that turn on when they open their mouth and when they flick their tongue real fast it creates friction....that in turn causes a spark that ignites the gas......which at full force can create over 1000* F.
