I really want to start using birth control. My boyfriend uses condoms and we try to be safe, but I still worry. I've always hated doctors and a pelvic exam is out of the question. I understand the risks I'm taking but I just can't bring myself to do it. It took 2 years to even get comfortable to have sex, I am that shy. Will any doctors out there write prescriptions for birthcontrol without being touchy feely?

I'm 21 years old. (Yes I should have done this by now, but again you see my problems with doctors.)

Thanks for answers so far. I might try seeing a couple different doctors to see if one will let me do this without an exam. I'm half-scared theyll lock the door on me and hold me down though. I hate them even more now... :( wish me luck.

No doctor is going to risk his own practice doing some funny stuff on you. Its just your imagination. Tell yourself that millions of other women have done this and will continue to do this. You would not be anything any different that the other women he has examined. It is only in your mind but I know that is quite a big hurdle for you. You may want to go to a woman doc just to ease your fears.
Good luck!

In my experience, doctors have always held birth control prescriptions hostage to a pelvic and pap smear.
It was their way to ensure you came in for that yearly exam.
However, last year I went in and was told that as a woman under 40 I could skip the pap, etc and just get the script for the pills. Could have knocked my socks off. Since I was there, I had the whole exam anyway, but am still a little stunned by the docs willingness to prescribe without the exam.
I don't think this will be the case for you -- especially if you have never had an exam.
If you live in a state that shares a border with Mexico, you can go across and buy all the birth control pills you desire without a prescription. Last I checked, a month's worth was running about 15 bucks. You just walk into a pharmacy there and get what you want. This includes antibiotics and all sorts of other medicines the AMA does not trust American citizens to take on their own.

You do realize that a pelvic exam is not sexual, assuming your doctor is professional? They are needed for your health. In fact, a pelvic exam could possibly reveal WHY you are having such painful periods. That being said, it probably is possible. Discuss your concerns with the doctor. However, you need to make sure you talk about your options, and side effects. You are talking about depo, and for most people, it will stop the period. But for other people, it can make you bleed the entire time. Since it is a shot that lasts for 3 months, once you take it, you are stuck with the side effects for at least 3 months if it doesnt work out. It can also have LASTING effects on your reproductive system. EDIT.... I wouldnt be alive today if it weren't for someone poking and prodding my lady bits. Yes, it SUCKS, but it is necessary. A professional doctor will conduct him or her self just the same as if you were going in because of the flu.

Probably not.
No doctor would be ethically responsible in giving you bc without checking your general gynecological health.
Honestly, a pelvic is embarrassing but it's not that bad, really. Go to a female doctor because perhaps you'd find that more comfortable. The exam itself doesn't take very long -- the doctor would likely be all done within five minutes. Remind yourself that this doctor looks at coochies all day and yours isn't one they care all that much about, ha.
Seriously, going to the dentist or the eye doctor is much, much worse and takes longer. Getting a shot is worse. Giving blood is worse. It's not bad, I swear. You'll be OK.

It depends on the doctor. Some doctors do and others don't. But you may want to get it done anyway. Its really not as bad as you think. But you should get paps now that you are having sex and over 18. They are extremely important in preventing cervical cancer. Would you rather the discomfort of a pap or die of cancer.
Find yourself a good gyn by getting recommdations from friends, have a girl friend come with you and ask for a nurse. Trust me it could save your live

you really need to get a pelvic exam...it's not like you have to enjoy them but for your health, your gonna need them. you might want to tell the doctor about your fear and see if she could help you work through that.
